Like, really.
People make me sick, but that is a really big issue to comment on 1.30 in the morning with a big presentation tomorrow. I just had to make this post; I've had enough with Tumblr. Yes, I am aware that being who I am I have followed many ED accounts, and generally some "emo" ones. I am immune to the sight of scary looking rib cages, cut wrists and emaciated bodies, all of Tumblr girls who voluntarily upload them. But at sick posts is where I draw the line.
A week ago, I think, I saw on my dash a video of a girl purging on top of a toilet with more than a thousand notes. I was a little annoyed but decided to scroll past it. Two days ago, (some of you may know this, if not sorry for bringing it up) there was a post of a removed fetus (it's like a baby at it's earliest stages inside the womb) wearing a hat. I mean it wasn't scary looking because I study biology and a life (hmm, well) is a beautiful thing IF YOU LET IT GROW. Okay, I'm not opening the abortion issue either, it's late, every woman has the right to control her body and decide what will go through, but fucking don't dress a fetus and post it all over the internet. It's disturbing.
But tonight, tonight is where I've had enough. Seeing a (13.159 notes) post about a woman beating an infant. Why? From all I could see there was a child too young to be able to stand up, crying, and a woman just sitting there hitting it(her?) with a pillow and then with her hands. The woman was obviously mental because she was just sitting there and getting all her nerves out on a little baby, with another child watching. What kind of post is that? Is that raising awareness? The fact that someone obviously was filming it and doing nothing to stop this madness, is this awareness? The fact that the infant was physically and emotionally traumatised, another child was looking at this also being instant traumatised by the cruelty and possible AN ADULT standing behind a camera or a cell phone doing nothing.
HOW IS THAT AWARENESS?
Ladies of Tumblr, if you want awareness read, travel, care and fucking act. Don't wait a famous Tumblr post to tell you this is a wild, wild world. Please and thank you.
There is a line, and those people crossed it.
ReplyDeleteYou do NOT turn child abuse into cheap entertainment. You do not joke about doing so. Children are vulnerable, dependent and extremely valuable resources. They are our future. To pretend to promote "awareness" with something obviously filmed solely for for shock and entertainment purposes utterly infuriates me.
Slactivists also grind my gears. "Liking" a facebook page instead of going and donating some time or money to a cause really doesn't say anything about your values at all. We're so buried in apathy and estrangement that we've lost sight of reality.
I hope your day has improved from those horrible posts. While there are a lot of complete and utter douchecanoes out there, not all humans are bad. Guess why?
You're living proof there are good ones.

I've never heard of the term "slactivists" but I completely agree with you on that sentiment. So many people are more concerned with gaining popularity through shock tactics than about the shocking things themselves. I'm not so sure it is the individuals themselves to blame though. It's only a symptom of a bigger issue... that society allows for people to develop this way. It's unfortunate, but sadly it has been like this since humanity began. Bloodsport for entertainment has always been a quintessentially human activity (eg ancient Rome). But like Peridot said, there are always people who are nothing like this, and we should be happy that such people still exist in spite of all this.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a tumblr account, which is probably a good thing. I don't think I could watch, read, or see things like this without wanting to beat some people's asses.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it is a crazy, scary world out there. And I too have had days where I think what the hell is wrong with people! What are they thinking? Case in point...my ex husband and his mistress...
